GeorgiA River Survey

The Georgia River Survey is an independent project based in Athens, GA that undertook to travel several major rivers of Georgia by canoe in 2003, 2004, and 2006, and to perform an ecological survey along each stream’s length . . .

We made the frontpage! In June of 2006 we paddled some 150 miles down the low waters of the Oconee River with a multitude of friends over two weeks. We persevered through Tropical Storm Alberto - enjoyed the cool air it brought - and survived sweltering temperatures of over 100 degrees. Learn more about our trek from our fellow surveyor and writer, Ben Emanuel, in his Flagpole Magazine article: "Two Weeks On The Oconee: No Matter If There's Water In It."

In Fall 2005, one of our members, Ben Emanuel, went down the Savannah River with the Savannah Riverkeeper's Executive Director, Frank Carl, and many others on the annual Coastal Plain Meander. Ben served as the crew's Naturalist, as well as preliminary information gatherer for a possible ecological survey. Read about Ben's Savannah venture here:
"Meandering Down The Savannah."

In May and June of 2004 we traveled nearly 400 miles down the Ocmulgee and Altamaha Rivers from Lake Jackson's Lloyd Shoals Dam to US 17 in Darien, GA. Our journey lasted six weeks and taught us a lot more about life on a river. Ben Emanuel (at left taking notes) tells all about our trip in his Flagpole Magazine article: "Down To The Sea In Canoes"

In the deluge of May 2003 we paddled some 180 miles down the Satilla River through the mosquito infested swamps of south Georgia (homeland for two us!) from GA 64 in Atkinson County to US 17 in Woodbine, GA over nearly 3 weeks. The following June we took another journey of about 250 miles to survey the Flint River from Flat Shoals Rd on the Meriwether/Pike Co. line to US 84 in Bainbridge, GA. In August 2003 we made a more informal survey of the Etowah and Coosa Rivers in NE Georgia, captured eloquently by our friend Scott Eustis (at left) in his Georgia Landscape article: "In Bartram's Wake" (PDF)

A more technical approach:
Our proceeding from the April 2005 Georgia Water Resources Conference held in Athens, GA by the University of Georgia: "Ecological Surveys of Four River Corridors In Georgia" (PDF)
